Design Practice In Context 2 Lecture 22/01/14

time-cost-quality-triangle

The client wants it cheap, highest quality possible and in the shortest time. Each of these components affects the other if reduced (eg if you reduce time taken on a brief, it will affect quality and cost). This model is fundamental to any working practice.

If we look at the design process there are three distinct elements:

  • Design Phase
  • Execution Phase
  • Implementation Stage

Design Phase

This covers all aspects related to the design:

  • Research
  • Idea Generation
  • Design Concepts
  • Design Embodiment
  • Technical Completion

Execution Phase

This covers all aspects related to the completion and production of the design.

Technical Completion

Production Issues – print, 3D aspects, moving image, etc

Delivery

The Implementation Phase

This covers all aspects related to the design and production once it is out in the public domain.

When undertaking planning, always work backwards. You need to know the deadline in order to hit it. Before the deadline, there are a number of processes to be considered:

  • Courrier
  • Digital Format
  • Mac Operatives
  • Design Process
  • Client Meetings

Other things that need to be considered:

  • Time of year
  • Holidays
  • Family
  • Illness

Ensure that leeway is built into this as well.
